I hate the way I look

I had a right mastectomy in Feb 25 no reconstruction.

I hate the way I look

I hate the prosthesis given by my specialist nurse it's too heavy and makes me too hot

I bought other types of prosthesis, lighter in weight, but hate them too

I hte that I have no cleavage

I hate that I can't wear a lot of my clothes now as they show too much

What are my realistic options and how do I stop feeling so self conscious??

  • Hello, and thank you for posting. I am sorry that you feel this way.

There is a lot to adjust to after treatment, and particularly when surgery has changed your appearance in some way. It can take time to get used to these changes, and that time is different for everyone. It may also be that you need some support to help you through this period of change.

I think it is important for you to let someone know how you are feeling.

If you are still in contact with the breast team at the hospital, maybe speak to your breast specialist nurse about how you feel about the prosthesis. They would also be the best people to know if you have any other options. It may also be that they can refer you for some emotional support or counselling. If not, your GP may be able to help.

We have information on our website about life after surgery, and both Breast Cancer Now and Macmillan have similar pages about these changes to your body.

It might also be worth posting on threads about 'living with cancer' to hear from others who have gone through similar. This can also be a support.

Take care, and I hope you get the information you need to help you start to feel better. If you would like to talk things through with the nurses do call 0808 800 4040. Lines are open Mon-Fri, 9-5.

    Sarah.
