Multiple myeloma

I have been told my CT scan and bloods etc show multiple myeloma.

I have had two urgent referrals sent for screening, one from the hospital and one from my GP.

How long will I wait for my appointment?

I have waited two weeks and finding the waiting very difficult.

Please could you kindly advise me?

    • Hello Marinam7879, I was diagnosed with MM in 2012. By screening do you mean type of myeloma?
If I remember rightly they had to send a sample of bone marrow to another hospital to determine type of myeloma. I think it took 3-4 weeks . At the time, the waiting was very difficult. The doctors didn’t seem too concerned, as they said myeloma is slow growing. And here I am thirteen years later.
      My haematology team are brilliant.
      Good luck
  • Thank you so much. I am waiting for either a bone marrow sample to be done or a biopsy from my rib lesions...I believe to determine which type.

Like you they don't seem to be too concerned but did say I would hear quickly.

Your 3-4 weeks sounds reassuring as I have heard it can take up to 28 days.

I am so happy to hear you are OK 13 years later but of course having continual care.

Wishing you well and everything I would wish for myself in the future.

I guess for anyone it is a case of stay strong which I wish for you too

  • Hello Marinam 7879 and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation. If you have had an urgent referral and have been waiting a couple of weeks I am sure you will hear very soon. You could give the haematology secretary a ring to see when you are likely to get an appointment.

I can understand what an unsettling time you must be having but hopefully once you have a clearer picture of what is happening next it will be easier to get your head around it all.

Once you have seen the haematologist you will probably have a haematology nurse who will help support you and offer you guidance and information about any forthcoming treatments.

Myeloma UK is a useful organisation that you might find helpful to look at.

We have some pages on our website about Myeloma which you might find helpful to look at.

Do give the nurses a ring if you would like to talk things through.

The helpline number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
