Panicking about meeting after ultrasound

Hi. Not sure if you can help but I need someone to talk to.  My doctor sent me for an ultrasound after I had 2 spots of blood on my pants.  It only happened once and stopped as soon as it started.  She did an internal examination and said she didn’t think there was anything to worry about.  I had my ultrasound last Tuesday afternoon and early next morning I was phoned to make a meeting with a gynaecologist in out patients.  No reason why was given. My appointment is on Monday so I’ve had 4 days of panicking with more days to go before I get an answer.  I am panicking so much I can’t eat feel sick and my stomach is in knots.  I’m imagining all sorts.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I see you are attending the hospital today. You may now have more information about your situation.

The important thing to remember is that going to see a gynaecologist doesn't automatically mean that something serious is wrong. GP's often make these referrals simply so that the right specialist can have a proper look and give you the best advice.

I hope you get more clarity on your situation today. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Sorry for delay in getting back to you.  Saw gynaecologist and had examinations.  All looked fine as did the ultrasound but elected to have a biopsy but he didn’t see any problems

Today I’ve received a call from the consultant to say that unfortunately they have found cancerous cells in the biopsy and it will mean a hysterectomy.  He thinks it’s very early stages.  I’m not sure what happens next apart to wait to be contacted.  What’s the chances that this could have spread from somewhere else.

Sorry if I sound paranoid but I’m in shock

  • Hello and thank you for your further post,

I can imagine that finding out the biopsy did show cancer cells has been a shock for you.

This period of waiting to hear back from the hospital can be very stressful and cause anxiety.

The hospital will be in touch soon with appointment details, and further scans may be needed, such as a CT scan, before surgery.

Doctors must have all the information they need before planning treatment, so it means there are periods of waiting, and it is natural to worry that the cancer will spread during this time.

We know that most cancers grow slowly, and waiting a few weeks for tests and treatment is unlikely to affect the outcome of treatment.

Having said this, it is not an easy period of waiting, and I hope you have support at this time. Some people find it helpful to distract themselves by carrying on with daily activities such as working, but for others, this does not help; everyone is different. If you would like to talk things through, please feel free to give the nurses on the helpline a call. We are available between 9am and 5 pm Monday to Friday and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040.

I hope this helps in some way,

    Jemma
