Abnormal smear results

Please can I get some advice ( I've lots both parents to undiagnosed short illnesses ) and need some professional help.

I've just had a phonecall to tell me I have abnormal cells following a smear test result. As my Father had a brain tumour and died 6 weeks after they told him , iim mentally quite distressed.  The nurse is apparently off on holiday now and noone else can help me . My results were I'm told 'borderline', we don't have  lots of spare money but should I try and get some private help. If so can you advise me where I should go/ contact. For my mindim not sure I can leave this

Many thanks for any advice you can give

  • Hi Em101 and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I just wanted to let you know that our nurses work between 9a.m - 5p.m so although you won't hear from them this evening, they will get back to you as soon as they can.

Our nurses will go in to more detail when they respond but I just wanted to share some information we have about abnormal cervical cells. I hope this helps and is able to ease your mind slightly whilst you wait.

We're here for you Em, and sending all our support your way.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Hello, and thank you for posting.

I am sorry that you are worried about a borderline smear result.

This does not mean you have cancer. Sticking to the NHS cervical screening programme means that any abnormal cells are removed before they could possibly mature into a cancerous cell in the future.

I can understand that when you have lost your parents, it can make you think and worry more about your health. But do be reassured that very few cancers are hereditary.

If you are worried about cancer, then reading our pages on reducing your risk may be helpful.

Take care, and if you want to call the nurses on the helpline ring 0808 800 4040. Lines are open mon-fri, 9-5.

    Sarah.

    1. Thank you so much Steph and Sarah for your help ,guidance , and  professional knowledge XXx.
