Painful swollen Lymph node in neck

Hello,

my husband was finally diagnosed with AITL in Dec ‘24 but due to his severe heart failure his treatment was palliative with cyclophosphomide & steroids only. The cyclophosphomide was stopped about five weeks ago when he deteriorated and slept for 9 days in a row. There is a DNR in place and he has visits from the palliative care team too.

He has developed a painful node in his throat which has been swollen for over 18 months, no fever, painful to swallow at times, and his breath is really bad, his teeth seem to be ok.
I’m at a bit of a loss as what to do.

Many thanks.

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your husband.

Unfortunately without being involved in his care and not being able to assess him, we suggest you speak with the palliative care team involved so they can advise you.

We appreciate how difficult times like this can be for both the patient and the loved ones, so I do hope you are getting the support and help you need as well.

Do get back in touch if needed or alternatively give us a call on 0808 800 4040 if you prefer. We are here weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  • Hi Naomi,

    Thanks for your kind words.

I know it’s a difficult situation to try to help us without knowing him, I think I was just putting into words my fears, which are real, and sometimes just feels too much to cope with.
My poor man also has Vascular Dementia and has no idea how really unwell he is, I don’t know if he was fully cognisant whether it would be easier, but at least I don’t have his fears of a painful death to deal with too.
    Thanks again. x
