Stage 4 prostate cancer with normal PSA?

Hi. A few months ago I had a PSA test, a CT scan of the pelvic area and a chest X Ray  after generally feeling unwell, shakey and tired for several months before. I also had and have spasms in different areas of my body, fast pulse rate and  a burning pain in my buttocks. Since then I regularly get pain in the hips, a tingling pain in my back and chest and a strange numbness to my face. I also feel like I've got a hang over every day since December. Work has been incredibly hard for the last 6 momths.  After a few months of feeling unwell I became increasingly worried that it may be cancer, especially stage 4 prostate. The chest x Ray came back as normal and so did the CT scan except for a moderately enlarged prostate (the report said that concern for this was low) The PSA result was normal (I'm 52) I'm still so worried that this is something very serious. I haven't been back to my GP since having the results back in March as I just can't face it and my wife and I had been so worried. I'm wondering how likely it is that I have advanced prostate cancer with a normal PSA and just an enlarged prostate on the CT scan? Sorry for how disjointed this post is, as writing isn't my strong point

  • Hi there and thanks for posting. I think we may have spoken on the helpline this morning.

I appreciate how worrying these ongoing symptoms are for you so do go back and speak with your GP so they can reassess you as what other tests or referrals can be made.

It is reassuring that there haven't been any real red flags or significant abnormalities found on any of the tests you have had carried out so far.

It would be unusual for someone with an advanced stage prostate cancer to have a normal psa reading alongside normal looking scans. If anything suspicious had been noted around the prostate or anywhere else in the body on one of the scans the doctor would have arranged more investigations to find out more.

Try not to worry about this too much, as I said symptoms can be caused by many different things and most won't be cancer.

I hope you can speak with your doctor soon to let them know how unwell you are still feeling and get some clearer answers.

    All the best

    Naomi

  • Hi Naomi. Yes that was me you spoke to earlier that day.  Thanks very much for your advice and help. I'll definitely be contacting my GP surgery. Charlie
