Waiting time for breast surgery has been so long. Worried my cancer has spread.

I went to my GP on April 11th.
not being operated on until June 30th!! I’m really worried in the meantime it’s spreading. I’m having therapeutic Mammoplasty for grade 2, HER 2 neg cancer. Any thoughts??

  • Hi LadyPaul,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

Many of us worry about our cancer spreading before we have our surgery. Cancer clinics throughout the country are busy places and they don't always have a space to operate on us immediately. You don't say what type of breast cancer you have. Priority is usually given to those with some of the more aggressive strains. Some of these start with treatment before surgery, whilst others go straight in to surgery. You will have been waiting just over 2 months, when you have your surgery. By the time we have had scans, tests, biopsies, etc and decided upon treatment options, this is about the normal waiting time for most of us. Your consultant would not have scheduled your appointment for the end of June, if s/he felt that there was any likelihood of your cancer spreading within this time frame. With Grade 2, HER negative diagnosis, you have every chance of a good recovery.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you that’s reassuring.
    grade 2, invasive ductal cancer.

  • I am not a doctor, but this does seem to be about average for invasive ductal cancer. Try to place your faith in your care team, who do this day in day out and I'm sure that you'll be fine. I hope that all goes well on 30th June.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
