Lung cancer

My partner is experiencing every symptom of lung cancer but refuses to see a doctor because they are scared. They are a 57 year old smoker. Severe asmatic, cancer history in family.  Experiencing shoulder pain for 6 months, losing weight, severe fatigue, tingling in arms and hand, nails rounded. I try to encourage them to see a doctor but the fear is real. How long can they go on ignoring these symptoms

  • Hello Wee-wifey,

Denial is often born out of fear. I expect that your partner wants to go for testing but is held back by the idea of a painful announcement. I have just begun my journey, and am waiting for the results from my PET scan and brain MRI. It is always better to know, in my opinion, in order to look at treatment options, and to be able to hope for the best possible outcome. I would like to see my daughter walk down the aisle one day. None of us know how much time we have left, that is the truth. But better to face reality than to regret not having got help sooner. I hope you find the words to convince your partner to go in for testing, and I wish you both well on your journey.

  • You are most welcome. It's great that we can be here for each other. Can I ask you about one of the symptoms you describe? I too have had right side shoulder pain and tingling in my right hand. I thought it was a trapped nerve and unrelated, but you seem to say that it could be a recognised symptom of lung cancer? It would be great to know before Friday, so I can bring it up with the oncologist ...

  • Aparently it's a symptom that shows later on across the top of the shoulder, most people just put it down to pulled muscle or repetitive strain, but we know they haven't done any of these. The pain has been getting worse, more frequent and more severe. Everyone watches for the cough in lungs but due to being a smoker they've always had a cough

  • Thank you Wee-Wifey,

I will be sure to bring it up with the Onco, especially since it is really debilitating.
