Hysteroscopy worries

I have been told I need a hysteroscopy due to thickening of the womb and cysts.Im 64 so post menopausal.I don't want it because I find any kind of invasive procedures down there very painful. Is it bad that I would rather take my chances than have this done?

  • Hello Virgo1961 and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your situation it can be stressful and cause anxiety having to have tests.

Some people may decide to not have tests, and it is completely up to you whether or not you decide to go forward with the hysteroscopy.

If you are worried about pain or discomfort, you can have the hysteroscopy done under a general anaesthetic. The best person to discuss this with is the gynaecologist, who will know your situation. They will be able to go through the pros and cons of having the test done. They may be able to tell you how concerned they are it is cancer. You could also ask what would happen if you decided not to have the test, would they monitor you?

Although having a thickened womb does not mean it is cancer the difficulty is only a biopsy where the cells are looked at closely can confirm this. One of the advantages of the test is if cancer is found it does mean that treatment can be started quickly.

Do tell your doctor what your concerns are and they will be able to tell you what your options might be.

I hope you can get some support with this, if you would like to talk things through with one of the nurses on the helpline, we are available Monday to Friday and the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040

    Take care,

    Jemma
