Urgent referral waiting time

Helli, my mum has previously had breast cancer and recently found another lump. She was given an urgent referral on the 21st March but has still not received an appointment. Her NHS app referral is saying it is overdue and to get in contact. However when she’s tried to contact the appointment number she was told to wait and until the 14th before getting in contact. Is this correct information? Thank you very much.

  • Hello Worrieddaughter,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I see that you have posted your question to the nurses and I thought that I would reply, to advise you that the nurses are not here at the weekend. I expect that they'll get back to you on Monday.

The aim is for all urgent referrals to be seen within 2 weeks from the date of referral, but this time can extend in some busy hospitals. Although your mum has waited for an extra week, it sounds as if the advice given about waiting until 14th, is the correct advice. I do hope that she hears soon. If not, do phone the number given after 14th, to remind them that she's still waiting. You will usually get the appointment through quite soon after this, but if not, offer to take any cancellations, These often come up and it is a good was of bringing an appointment forward.

As someone who has had 2 bouts of cancer myself, I know what a worrying wait this can be. Not all lumps are cancerous, so here's hoping that all turns out well for her in the long run,

Do please keep in touch and let us know how she gets on. We are always here for you both.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamne xx

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your mums previous cancer diagnosis and appreciate how finding a new lump is now causing concerns.

Unfortunately there are many people who are having to wait longer than the recommended 2 weeks to be seen on a suspected cancer pathway. I appreciate how unsettling this can be for people with symptoms but there isn't much more that can be done I'm afraid until the 14th.

Hopefully your mum will hear something this week but if the appointments line have said to wait until the 14th before getting back to them, then that is what your mum needs to do.

If your mum is still under the care of the breast unit ( and oncologist) she could try and call them and see if they can do anything sooner.

I hope you both know more soon and that everything turns out okay for your mum.

You know where we are if you need to get back in touch. We're also here on the end of the phone weekdays 9-5 on 0808 800 4040 if you prefer.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
