Breast Cancer

Hello Nurses Team.

Please my younger Sister was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer last October 2024.

She had the lump removed in December 2024 from her right breast and has started 6months of Chemotherapy and has also been told she would have radiotherapy.

She has not shown me any letters from the Hospital and I am being mindful not to be too much in her face.

I am not sure if she said positive but there has been an aunt with breast cancer from her mother's side that passed away about 10yrs ago.

She is not my biological Sis but very close. I know its early days yet and am just wondering that at stage 2 is there a possibility that the cancer had spread that's why the aggressive treatment ?  I am just worried that she might not be telling me everything

Wouldn't mastectomy would have been a better option for her for both breast and reconstructive?

Also after treatment how often can she safely have mamogram i?

Thank you

  • Hello MercyA and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your sister and I can understand that you want to know more. It is difficult to tell you too much about her cancer without being involved in her care. You may find it helpful to suggest that you go to an appointment with your sister so you can see what is involved.

Treatment for patients is treated very individually and many women do receive chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Stage 2 breast cancer is an early stage breast cancer. Your sister's treatment would have been decided at a

Breast MDT where all the doctors involved in her care would have decided the best treatment for her particular cancer.

Often a lumpectomy is performed if the surgeon feels that this is the best surgery for a patient. The operation is less invasive and they can recover more quickly. The surgeon always makes sure that there is a healthy margin of skin around the area that was removed.

You can read the information on our website about how the surgeon decides which surgery is the best for a particular patient.

Hospitals vary for breast cancer follow up but patients will normally have a mammogram every year for five years. You can read about breast cancer follow-up

I do hope that this has helped answer your questions.

Do give us a ring if you want to talk things through. Our helpline number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,
