Fibroadenoma - would this be picked up on a mammogram or ultrasound?

Hello because of my mum's family history, I've always worried about breast cancer.  I was at the breast clinic 4/5 months ago for a cyst which was removed. I had a diagnostic mammogram and he did ultrasound both breasts for because I was so anxious.  I was told I had a small fibroadenoma in my left breast 2 years ago.  I went through the biopsy route.  I'm just wondering would this fibroadenoma lump be picked up on the mammogram or ultrasound.  I was not something I mentioned at my appointment as I went in with a different lump however they would have all my records. Appreciate any reassurance and advice .  I did have another fibroadenoma 13 years ago and that was biopsied at the time but never mentioned again and to be honest I don't think I can feel that one now.

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your mum's family history of breast cancer and how this makes you worry about your own health.

It sounds like you have been closely assessed on a number of occasions at the breast clinic but nothing sinister has been picked up, which is reassuring.

Fibroadenoma's I am sure you are aware are common and aren't usually anything to worry about. There is more information about these and other benign (non cancerous) breast conditions on the Breast cancer Now website.

Fibroadenomas can sometimes shrink or disappear by themselves over time, but if large enough should be picked up on breast screening tests such as a mammogram and ultrasound.

If you remain concerned I would suggest speaking with your GP again so they can reassess you and hopefully put your mind at ease.

    All the best

    Naomi
