Advanced bladder cancer

My dad has been diagnosed with small cell bladder cancer, he also has a blood cancer called polycythemia Vera which makes chemotherapy difficult.

The doctor told him that his death would be very painful and it's likely that he will suffer blockages in his catheter which will also be painful.

I don't really know what my question is I'm just looking for some reassurance that his pain will be manageable

Thank you

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am very sorry to hear about your husband and his diagnosis of advanced bladder cancer.

Some patients do have problems with pain, but your husband should be referred to the palliative care team, who are experts in symptom control. They will get to know you and your husband at home and work with the GP and district nurses to provide emotional support and help his quality of life.

I cannot comment too specifically on what the doctor said to your husband, but palliative care teams are very used to managing symptoms in patients like your husband so will know how to help and support you.

Take care and I hope you have support at this time, if you want to talk to the nurses on the helpline do call 0808 800 4040. Lines are open mon-fri 9-5.

    Sarah.
