Prostate cancer

Hi. I’ve just been diagnosed with prostate cancer and am feeling very upset, scared and anxious. My cancer hasn’t spread out of the prostate (apparently) but I’m waiting a bone scan. What is the chance it might be in my bones? I have one 4-3 and a few 3-4 results

  • Hi 8RE, and welcome to the forum, though sorry you have to be here, I too have prostate cancer, a bone scan is a routine scan, It's not done because they think your cancer is in your bones, they are just being thorough, and almost everyone gets one, and as the majority of your Gleason scores are 3+4=7, this is a good indicator your cancer is contained in your prostate. best wishes.

    Hi Eddie.
sorry to hear of your diagnosis too. Thank you for replying, I’m thinking of going for prostate removal as I’m relatively young (53!) My consultant went through the process and I think that is my best plan of attack to beat this. Have you got this far yet? And how have you been?

Hi 8RE, can I suggest you keep an open mind regarding treatment until all your results are in, and you've talked to your oncologist.

It's a big, and difficult choice you have to make, and one to better make when you're fully informed, and please bear in mind a surgeon will favour surgery, hence the need to talk to your oncologist first.

I was diagnosed 32 months ago, I started on hormone therapy HT, straight away with radiotherapy RT, 8 months later, a little longer than most people wait due to me needing a TURP, my cancer is metastatic and aggressive, it was in 5 organs and 8 lymph nodes, at my last scan results, my cancer was undetectable apart from 1 lymph node.

    Hi Eddie.
oh blimey, sorry to hear that. I suppose I am jumping the gun a little as I’ve only just been diagnosed and understandably very anxious about the whole thing. I will wait for the bone scan and subsequent meeting to discuss further. Atm it’s contained within the prostate.

Good to hear, and being anxious at diagnosis is normal, there are many treatments for prostate cancer which is contained,  and many possible side effects to consider, it's important you understand everything about your diagnosis, to be able to make the right decision for you, and remember not all hospitals offer every treatment, if yours doesn't offer the one you want, you can go to one that does, and you are also allowed to get a second opinion if your not satisfied with your consultant's, I know it's a lot to take in and you will want to research your options, but please don't use Google, use trusted sites like Macmillan, CRUK, Proostate cancer UK and the NHS websites.

I haven’t googled about it since my psa test came through! I’ve got some more reading to do from the hospital handout and also the sites you’ve said about.  My consultant did say about getting a second opinion and also that I could go to Cambridge (I’m at Bury st Edmunds) so several things to consider. Thank you

Anytime , there is a wonderful book online,  well worth reading called, Fighting prostate cancer-a survival guide. by Dr  Jyoti  Shah, it's a great introduction to everything you need to know at diagnosis.

Eddie's advice is spot on. The NHS is over run, and appoinments and contacts often need to be chased, so making sure you proceed along the path you want is important. There are a lot of good, unbiased Youtube videos from the Prostate Cancer Research Institute in America, but they refer to choice of oncologst etc which the NHS rarely offers. Aside from that they offer very reassuring advice.

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am very sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis and appreciate what an anxious and worrying time this must be for you. I do hope you have family and friends to support you as well at this difficult time.

It sounds like the doctors are pretty confident that the cancer is confined within the prostate so they are likely to be carrying out the bone scan just to be extra thorough.

Unfortunately no one here can say the exact chance there is of the cancer having spread to the bones but I imagine this would be a small one. For now you need to hang in there and wait and see what the scan shows.

Waiting for test results is never easy but often people find keeping themselves busty with other things and their mind distracted can help pass the time.

I do hope everything works out for you and that you have a treatment plan very soon.

Do get back if you need to or if you prefer to talk over the phone our number is 0808 800 4040, we're here weekdays ( closed new years day) 9-5.

    Take care
