Flu jab

Hi, I had a flu jab in February, before starting chemo and not sure if Ishould now get another one. Oncologist me to ask gp abd gp said it's up to oncologist, just can't get an answer! I have read that effectiveness only lasts six months, so I'm worried that I'm not covered!

  • Hi Pippin24. and thank you for your post.

Since the strain of flu changes each year, it is recommended that you get a flu vaccine annually to stay protected. As you had your last flu vaccine in February that would have covered you for last year’s flu strain. Flu season normally starts in the autumn / winter period. While getting vaccinated in autumn is ideal, getting vaccinated later in the year is still advisable.

It does take about 10 days after vaccination to develop full immunity. Obviously anyone being treated for cancer normally seeks advice from their hospital specialist. Do you have a nurse specialist you can talk to?

If you have completed treatment, and your hospital specialist advises the flu vaccine then you should get this free at your GP surgery.

I hope you can get this sorted soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards

    Tina
