Caring for Mum after bowel resection

In the space of 2 years my Mum has undergone 3 different bowel surgeries. April of this year was her most recent. She has had a bowel resection and we were really hopeful that she could start to get her life back again. About 3 months ago, Mum started with pain in her abdomen which got worse every time she ate something. The pain is now so bad she is barely eating and existing on build up drinks, soup and cups of tea. She doesn’t go out anymore and painkillers don’t help her. I haven’t mentioned to her but I’m concerned that she has an anastomic leak. We have another 2 weeks to wait for an X-ray and I’m just worried that Mum will get worse before then. We were really hoping that this Christmas would be better than our last 2. Mum is 76 and incredibly underweight. I’m my Mum’s carer.

I would really appreciate some advice.

Thank you so much,

  • Hi Carer43, and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your mum's situation, and that she is in a lot of pain this must be very difficult for you all.

If over the weekend your mum's symptoms worsen and if you are concerned she may have an anastomic leak you can get advice from NHS 111 or take her in to your local A and E

Otherwise do contact her team at the hospital as soon as possible, perhaps getting in touch with the nurse specialist (CNS). They may want to see her to assess her before the X ray and can advise you about pain relief.

You could also try asking the GP for advice if you are unable to contact the team at the hospital.

I hope your mum's symptoms can get sorted out quickly. Please feel free to get back us. If you would like to speak with one of our nurses the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040 and we are available between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Jemma
