Stabbing pain in the armpit

Hi,

I underwent lumpectomy and lymph node dissection last week and I have now developed a stabbing pain in my armpit. The consultant said that my sentinel node was enlarged so he has removed a cluster close to that. The pain started yesterday, is this normal?

Thankyou:)

  • Hello, I went through a full mastectomy and had all the lymphnodes from under my arm removed at the same time and the armpit pain was genuinely worse than the chest pain. Stay dosed up and resting it’s very early days since your op but keep a diary of the symptoms as you go as well. Hope you feel better soon :)

  • Morning, thanks so much for responding:) I had heard that the armpit pain could be worse, but I really wasn't expecting the pain to be so severe. I resorted to taking some codeine yesterday, but hoping I'll manage with paracetamol today. I really hope that your recovery is going well xx

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

As you are only a week from surgery to remove lymph nodes, there will be various aches and pains as you heal.

Tissues and nerves will be meshing together and this causes different feelings in that area.

Do take some over-the-counter painkillers, but if you feel they aren't enough do talk to someone in your team for something stronger.

Take care and if you want to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline the number is Freephone 0808 800 4040. The lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
