Prostate cystitis

Hi, suffering a bit from what I’m told is Prostate cystitis. Finished sabre radiotherapy in February and seemed to get after effects a couple of months ago,up during the night sometimes every 2hours.a burning sensation when passing urine,I was told to take ibuprofen but that just upset my stomach.iv been tested for infection and am clear.are there any drugs I can take to solve this issue please.

                     Regards Graham

  • Hi Graham, and welcome, like you post radiotherapy I had troubles peeing, frequency, flow and retention problems, mostly due to an enlarged prostate, I was going at least once a hour during the day, flow was often for just a second, I was getting up at night sometimes ten times and I had the burning sensation when peeing especially in the gland, I was prescribed alfa-blockers "tamulosin", which helped, but because of the size of my prostate 93mm, it was crushing my urethra and needed a TURP, to open it up, which was a big help,

    Eddie.

  • Thanks Eddie, am am on tamulosin so not so much retention but the burning and as you say the frequency at night.hopefully it will settle down, thank you for replying

  • Hello Graham, and thank you for posting

I am sorry you are suffering from prostate cystitis as a late effect of your radiotherapy treatment. Do talk to someone in your team and let them know that this is a problem for you. We do have tips on dealing with bladder changes after treatment, but your doctor would be able to discuss if there are suitable medications.

Macmillan also discusses this on their website which may be helpful to read.

If you want to hear from others in a similar situation, it may help to move this post to the forum's 'living with cancer' thread.

Take care Graham, and if you want to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
