Chemical exposure and lung cancer

Hi I am new and am looking for a bit of advice.

I have had surgery and am undergoing chemo. It is very possible that I could have been exposed to industrial chemicals (unknowingly) for over 20 years. Does anyone know how to go about being tested.  Thank you in advance.

  • Hello Jeanette and thank you for your post

I am sorry to hear you are currently undergoing treatment for lung cancer.

We have information about the risks and causes of lung cancer on our website so do take a look at these. Whilst exposure to some chemicals may increase the risk of lung cancer it can be difficult to know for sure what the main factors were involved in an individuals cancer developing.

Unfortunately there often isn't any testing that i'm aware of that can be done to find out if an individual has been exposed to a particular chemical. The Health and Safety Executive HSE have a section of information about chemical use at work and ensuring work places have put measures in place to protect individuals working with high risk substances in their roles. As well as this inspections are usually carried out of workplaces to ensure that these standards are maintained.

I would suggest you speak with your own doctor about any concerns you have so they can also advise you further about this.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  • Thank you so much for your advice.  I think the doctors may be the best solution as the chemicals were illegally stored behind our house.  Unfortunately, they were not properly stored.  I think it's time to chat to my GP.  Thank you again.
