Fasting before BCG immunotherapy?

I’m Roger, 69yo male new to all this!

My first session BCG for bladder cancer due on Monday - I’m wondering if aiming to starve cancer of glucose, creating a metabolic stress to weaken cancer cells immediately before BCG treatment is a good idea or not?

thank you

  • Hello Roger and thanks for posting

There is no known evidence that following a “sugar ( glucose) -free” diet lowers the risk of getting cancer, or boosts the chances of surviving it when you are diagnosed.

The idea of starving cancer cells by reducing glucose is based on the understanding that many cancer cells use more glucose than regular cells to grow. However, reducing glucose can also put healthy cells under stress and might impact your energy levels which can sometimes affect the immune system. As BCG relies on your immune response it's probably best not to interfere with this process. You can read more about sugar and cancer on our science blog.

We would always recommend that you talk this through with your specialist team.  If you have a specialist nurse (CNS) involved in your care then perhaps they can advise you further. You often have to call and leave them a message and they will get back to you.

I hope this is of some use. Give us a ring if you would like to talk things over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Thank you for this useful information and the links. Such a lot to take in right now and help from experienced people such as yourself is very much appreciated. I think I’ve picked up that starving or weakening cancer cells is very hard as they are metabolically flexible and can switch to different sources for energy.
For now in the light of your input I’ll try to stay healthy and support my immune system as we embark on a round of BCG immunotherapy.
