18 Year old daughter has lump in breast

Hello, my 18 Year old daughter has found a lump in her breast.

She went to the doctors who said it’s a 6cm cyst and to wait until after her period to see if it’s reduced in size. If it hasn’t they will send her for further tests. I just wanted to ask if it will be ok to wait and if the doctor can tell just by feeling the lump? I don’t want to leave it amd it turns out to be something more sinister. Thank you for your help.

  • My 23yr old just had a similar experience and was referred under the 2ww.  We panicked as the GP could clearly feel it but the consultant said I wouldn't even send her tor a scan but I will because I know you will worry.

All was well, was just normal lumpy breast tissue.

  • Thank you for your reply  Wishing I would have pushed for an ultrasound now. Pleased to hear your daughter is ok.

  • Still push for an ultrasound, your mind won't settle til someone has a look x

Not sure if you are financially able too but ultrasounds aren't very expensive if the NHS refuse. X

  • I wish I would have pushed in the doctors office but she was very convincing saying it is only a cyst. It is large but does move a lot. Her period is due next week so if it hasn’t changed I will call back and insist on an ultrasound. Thank you very much for taking the time to message. X

  • Hello and thank you for your post.

I can appreciate your concern for your daughter but please know that the likelihood of her having breast cancer is rare so it is acceptable for the GP to see if this lump is a cyst, which is a much more common thing to have. The breast team may also want to see this too.

Sending your daughter to the breast clinic before it is seen as necessary could mean she has tests and investigations she may not to need have and this could cause even more worry.

Also, even a delay of a few weeks, if she does find out she has breast cancer, is unlikely to make her situation worse.

I hope this helps. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline

  • Thank you Caroline, you have put my mind a bit more at ease. Her period is due soon so I will wait to see if it goes down, but have to admit am still anxious.  If it doesn’t I will book another appointment. Thank you for taking the time to reply
