Colonoscopy prep

Had bowel resection 4 years ago since when bowel have been sluggish, often tending towards constipation. Scheduled for a colonoscopy next week and looking to eat low residue in advance of starting bowel prep. This means that I'll probably be starting bowel prep whilst constipated. Is this likely to cause any issues? Can you offer any suggestions or will the picolax be sufficient?

Many thanks for your assistance.

  • Hello Helen and thanks for posting

Picolax is generally very effective in clearing out the bowel even if there is some constipation to begin with. However, since your bowel tends to be sluggish it might be worth asking your GP's advice about whether you should take a very mild laxative a few days before you start the picolax.

In the meantime, try to drink plenty of fluids. This will help keep things moving and can soften your stool making the bowel preparation work better.

I hope everything goes well with the colonoscopy next week. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
