Biopsy results

I had a routine mammogram on the 16th September. I got a recall at the breast clinic as the found a lump in my right breast they give me a 3D mammogram and ultra sound plus a biopsy they told me I would get my results on the 21/10/24 they have just rang me to say my results won’t be ready now till the 28th October. Why is it taking so long am really worried and haven’t slept does this mean it’s defined cancer with taking so long? Are they doing further testing because it cancer am really struggling

  • Hello Joanne 1923 and thanks for your post,

I can understand how stressful it can be waiting for results but I am afraid I can't say why you are waiting an extra week. It is usually 2 radiographers  who check the results of the mammogram and it maybe that there are a lot of mammograms to check in the department. The biopsy will go to the pathologist where they will look at the sample under a microscope.

Try not to think the worst if you can. Many women seen through screening don't end up being diagnosed with cancer but it is important that any lump is thoroughly investigated.

Do give us a ring if you want to talk things through with one of the helpline nurses. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine

  • I'm waiting on results after being told it's very likely breast cancer but this will give me details about what type, grade, stage etc. My consultant said it could be delayed if MDT doesn't have time to discuss first week after results are back, if pathologist is busy, if staff holidays etc. Basically told me to expect a week delay. I don't think it means it's any more likely to be cancer if it takes longer.

  • Sorry to hear this. Just full of anxiety waiting and when they phoned me today to say it’s been put back another week I just wasn’t expecting it.
