Suspected prostate cancer

Having felt poorly all of a sudden I rang my local doctor . For 2 days  a passed blood in my wee . It passed but I felt sore below . My sides and lower back . I my visit to the doctor I was checked by him and had the finger on my prostate . Tests seemed to be fine . I went to get a scan , and again seemed fine . I then have the blood tests and they say I’ve got a low iron store . So I’m having trouble weeing and my bowel movements aren’t great and painful . I want to go but not much happens .i got a text from my doctor saying they are referring me to urology clinic . Saying suggested prostate cancer . That was yesterday. I haven’t slept at all . I’m a wreck . I’m so upset and feeling like I’m going to die . I’m 49 . Consider myself fit . And don’t smoke . Or take drugs . Haven’t had a day off work on the sick in 5 or 6 years . Is there anyone who could give me some advice . I really need help . I’m hoping if it is early prostate cancer it’s treated asap .

  • Hi Stuart49, and welcome, though I'm sure you never wanted to be here. Stuart to be honest I don't know if you have prostate cancer, though your scan and DRE are fine, which is good news, as is your age, health and fitness, which should you be diagnosed will be big plusses with any treatments, which are amazing and improving all the time, and one thing to remember 98% of men with prostate cancer will not die of it, PS your feelings are normal, the thought of having cancer is a frightening experience. best wishes at urology, take care.

  • Have you had a PSA blood test ? If so what was the result ?

  • Not sure yet . I did bloods but awaiting the PSA

  • Hello Stuart49 and thank you for your post,

I am sorry you are going through this and I can appreciate the worry you have. However, being referred for an suspected prostate cancer does not mean you necessarily have it.  This is because most people referred for suspected cancer will find out they don't have it.

It is reassuring that your symptoms have been taken seriously and you will get to see a urologist.  If cancer is found, you are right that finding it early means it can be treated more successfully.

In the meantime, little will be gained from searching online for a possible diagnosis, except more worry. Instead, if you can, try and keep your mind off this by keeping busy. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
