What goes in the spaces?

That looks a strange title for a topic!

Last November I had surgery to remove a huge sarcoma and, because of this, my left kidney, spleen, part of my pancreas and the left part of my bowel also had to be removed. I hope this doesn't sound a strange question, but what happens to the spaces that are left once those were removed?

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about the extensive surgery you needed to have last year and hope you have recovered from this.

The body is usually very good at repairing itself after surgery. Organs in the thoracic and pelvic region of the body are surrounded by connective tissues and other structures that protect and maintain the organs. When parts of organs are surgically removed this may result in some scar tissue to develop but otherwise these spaces will settle within the tissues and blood systems that normally reside in these places.

    I hope that makes sense.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  • Thank you, Naomi, that is interesting. Once upon a time I wouldn't even have thought about asking such a question, but now, since I have accepted and come / coming to terms with the fact that I have actually had cancer, I am curious about all sorts of things!

I shall always be grateful to the surgeons for my life.
