I'm afraid to go back to the hospital

I found out nearly 2 years ago I have cervical cancer and was waiting for a date to have surgery to remove my womb but I never went back to the hospital I iv ignored all letters sent to me from the hospital when I was last in the hospital they said if I didn't have my womb removed in a year I've die by five years and I was terrified so I've been trying to block it out like it's not real but so much time has passed and I'm getting worried now I'm afraid to go back to the hospital incase I'm told the cancer has spread

  • Hi Sonniaeggo and thank you for your post.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. It sounds like this is a difficult and frightening time for you.

It's understandable that you are scared. Receiving a cancer diagnosis is a time of great anxiety for many people.  Shock and denial  can be a very common reaction to a cancer diagnosis.

It is very important to take care of yourself and your well-being at this time.

I would advise you to contact the hospital specialist and explain the situation,  or your GP who will most likely start the referral again under the urgent pathway.

Until further investigations are completed, it will remain unknown if the cancer has spread. However, even if the cancer has spread, it may still be treatable and curable depending on what stage  it is.

We do have some information about cervical cancer and what to expect during treatment and beyond.

Some people find counselling useful. It may be possible for you to receive NHS counselling, but how long the waiting list is will vary from area to area. Some GP practices may also offer counselling. The NHS website has more information on how to access NHS counsellingMacmillan have teamed up with BUPA to offer free counselling sessions.

Maggie's are a great source of support for patients and can also provide counselling and talking therapy to help patients process what they are going through and help people cope and hopefully move forward.

I can appreciate there is a lot of uncertainty for you. I hope you know more about your situation soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Tina

  • Please, please, please book a GP appointment and get things checked out.

We have been dealing with GP's and consultants with my Dad and they have always shown such professional, understanding and care.

They will help and support you in anyway they can.

  • I'm new to the group but I thought I'd join as I had surgery a week ago although I had to have surgery on my vagina... I felt so embarrassed,I didn't no who to talk to and who to tell.

The hospital team including the nurses have been absolutely amazing, they take such good care of you.

The McMillan nurses are on hand all the time, if you find talking about it hard then you can email them instead.  Sometimes it's much easier to write it down and ask questions than face to face.

Have you managed  to go back or speak to anyone yet ??
