Wife and Carer

Hello

I am new to this forum .

in 2022 my husband was diagnosed with Stage 4 Prostate Cancer . I am his main carer although I know I can ask for help from Palliative Care who my husband is registered with .

i am an ex nurse, I administer all meds that my husband requires as his eyesight not too good . At the moment he has Covid but I am concerned that I may get Covid too and if I am so unwell to look after my husband will someone help to care for the both of us ?

  • Hi Hib and a warm welcome to the forum, though sorry you have to be here and your husband has cancer, I was also diagnosed in 2022 with T4 prostate cancer, the NHS do continuing healthcare for carers who are unable to care and the person being cared for, you ask your GP for a full carers assessment or fast track assessment, you could also talk to AgeUK, though your better calling the local branch rather than the national helpline, I see you also have the palliative care team on board, I would be talking to them as well. best wishes to you both.

Hi Eddie, Thank you kindly . So sorry to hear you have T4 Prostate Cancer too . I do hope you are getting all the support you need .

That is most helpful thank you , I had thought in back of my mind that Age Uk in my local area may be able to help . Speaking to my GP is a good option too.

I care for my husband but my concern was if I get ill and unable to care for him too.

    Thank you again Eddie .

You are welcome, I am somehow still independent, though I have the support of my hospice, district nurse and 7 consultants all from different departments. I know 1 or 2 nurses at the hospice and they see supporting the carer as a vital part of their job, fingers crossed covid passes you by or symptoms are mild. take care.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

Hopefully you won't catch covid but if you did I hope the symptoms are mild.

Do discuss your worries about this with the palliative care team. They can arrange a care package if needed.

It's important that you look after yourself. Macmillan Cancer Support have information on looking after yourself and how to access support.

There are often local charities that can also provide emotional and practical support. You can search what is available locally

I hope this is of some use. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Thank You Nurse Celine that is most helpful .
