Multiple tiny spots both lungs

Rectum cancer operation 1 year ago in May.  Yearly tests came back everything was fine except CT scan which showed:-

'Multiple tiny spots on lungs

1 spot on liver - unspecific

Results back liver spot is a cyst (no cancer).  No MRI scan was done of the lungs just the liver.  'Original notes states 'suspected metastasis cancer (lungs)'.

A biopsy is not an option as they are too small.  Oncology notified of results.  Nurse doesn't know what the next step will be.

Can you please tell me what normally happens in these cases?  NHS sites suggest more CT scans to see if the spots get bigger, change shape or disappear, but they don't mention metastasis cancer.

Thank you.

  • Hello Newday2024 and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn that you had rectal cancer and now there is possible cancer in your lungs.

As cancer information nurses not involved in your care, we cannot say what happens next or give a medical opinion. It sounds like your colorectal team is speaking with oncology. I don't know if this means you will now be under an oncologist (cancer specialist) or if your team is just waiting for an opinion from them.

It may also be the case that your situation will be discussed at a multidisciplinary meeting where all health professionals such as surgeons, oncologists, radiographers, and nurses meet to discuss individual patients and plan treatment.

Your colorectal specialist is the best person to discuss this with as they know your case. You could try contacting their secretary to see if it's possible to arrange an appointment with them to explain your situation and what the best way forward is.

I wish you all the best and hope that you can get some answers soon. Please feel free to get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Jemma
