Cancer spot found!

I was treated via Radiotherapy and Hormone therapy for prostate cancer 18 years ago.

Over the last few years my PSA has been slowly increasing and the latest was 5.48.

5 weeks ago, I had a PETCT scan which my PSA nurse tells me shows a small spot of cancer returned in my prostate but nothing elsewhere, apart from her phone call I have heard nothing from the hospital, how long should I have to wait.

In my anxious little mind, I think " cancer, urgent, start treatment as soon as poss.

Any advice please.

Concerned Roy.

By the way I am 83.

  • Hello Roy, sorry to hear about your diagnosis.  I think that you should contact your GP.  I know that you probably don't want to be thought of as a 'nuisance' but this is your health and your life at stake here, and sometimes we need to be a bit forthright, even with our doctors.  Good luck.

  • Thanks for your reply, have just done as you advise by email, will await GP's comments.

  • Dear Roy thank you for your post

I am sorry to learn about your situation, and can understand you wanting to know more.

There are various treatment options available if your prostate cancer returns. These options depend on your previous treatment and the location of the cancer recurrence.

Waiting times are only guidelines and many hospitals are finding it hard to achieve them due to being overstretched with their resources.

You could speak to the PSA nurse or your GP  to ask when you will get an appointment to see the hospital specialist to discuss if further treatment is necessary.

The other option is to raise concerns with the hospital  PALS  (patient advice and liaison service) officer, who can look into this for you.

I hope you hear more soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Tina
