Dad's got oesophageal cancer

Hi There,

My dad has recently been diagnosed with Oesophageal cancer. They are still performing various scans to find out how advance it is (so far they have found it in one LN and a PET scan showed a lump in his thigh).

My mum and dad are going to all the appointments together and they keep us up to date. But they often seem a bit confused by what's going on, and they are unable to answer any of my questions.

I have resorted to doing some of my own research, and the results aren't looking very hopeful. I don't feel like I can talk to my parents about this because I don't know how aware they are really about what's going on.

Is there anything I can do to try to find out more about what's going on, why are they doing certain tests, what does it mean, what are the treatment options. Why are they doing some things and not others etc. Is there anyone I can contact to ask the questions I have about it all.

I'm feeling lost, we are all in limbo and the not knowing is just awful. I don't know what to do with myself. Its occupying my entire brain!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your dad.

It sounds like the doctors are still trying to get as much information about your dad's cancer before they discuss the next steps.

It is not always straightforward diagnosing a cancer and there are often many different tests that are done to stage a cancer correctly.

The doctors also need to assess your dad's general health and work out the best treatment.

It may help and  if you are able to, to attend an appointment with his doctors so you can have a better understanding of what may happen next.

Your dad may have a specialist nurse and with your dad's permission you could perhaps ring them to find out more.

We do have some information on our website about decisions about treatment

Hopefully over the next week or so things should become clearer.

If you or your parents would find it helpful to ring and discuss any of this on the helpline then you are all very welcome to do so.

Our number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the nurses are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
