What Options are there for second opinions?

Hi - my sister has advanced stage 4 bowel cancer that has spread from her bowel to the lining of her abdomen / stomach. It seems to be growing at quite a speed - she is young, about 50.  She already has a stent in but there is a further partial blockage due to the growth.  They are planning to put another stent in and her treatment has changed from cure to contain.  Surgery is no longer an option for us according to the latest meeting of clinical professionals.  I am not doubting their diagnosis, but what options do I have to get a second opinion.  To explain, I imagine decisions are made on the basis of risk vs reward vs resources treatment takes up.  I want to know if there are any options available to me that give us a chance - any chance - that might have been dismissed for whatever reason.  I have one focus which is on my family member whereas medical professionals have multiple focuses that they have to balance.  I would just like to be as informed as possible before the fact rather than finding out options once it’s … too late.

Yours, clutching at straws.  :(

  • From some of the people, my wife met along the way, getting opinions after the 2nd or 3rd time is easier if you do research via the internet and go armed with valid data. Trials etc are also worth asking about. Or the biggie being, willing to go private.

  • Hello and thank you for posting. I am so sorry to hear about your sister and cannot imagine what you are all going through.

Understandably, you would always want to ensure that you have looked at everything, and is not usual for people to research second opinions. Do talk this through with her medical team as they will be used to these conversations and may be able to suggest another team or specialist to review her.

Sometimes people also look into second opinions within the private sector. Again her team may know of a specialist, or have private practice themselves.

Advanced bowel cancer surgery can be very complex and as you have said the team has to weigh up the risks. They can not knowingly perform surgery which may worsen your sister's health further or that will also not improve her situation. Once cancer cells have traveled from their original site, and are causing problems throughout the body, removing the original primary can sadly be of no benefit.

Do also talk your sisters situation through with the palliative care team who will be available at the hospital. They can be good at going through all aspects of the the care, and decision-making and be incredibly supportive as well as being experts in symptom management.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

Take care and I hope you get all the information you need.

    Sarah.
