Linitis Plastica

Hi,  my sister was diagnosed with linitus plastica of the stomach with ovarian cancer and lymph node cancer 4 weeks ago. The only symptoms she presented with were some acid reflux and a weight loss of approximately 2 stone through being sick after she ate.  She has spent the past 3 1/2 weeks in hospital and has just been moved to a hospice with a view to wanting to go back home.  They have withdrawn all feed as it was making her sick.  She has a pleural effusion and some ascites.  She has already had 10 litres of ascites drained a week ago. She has cachexia and weighs around 45kg.  In wanting to move home she has had all iv removed and has been given a morphine patch.  She is exhausted and although she can still move to get to the toilet and sit outside in the sun (when there is any) she needs assistance for showering and is incredibly weak.   I know we are on end of life care - my question is how long does this kind of situation go on for before the inevitable?   She is able to take small sips of water as her fluid intake.

  • Hi there abeano and thank you for posting

I am so very sorry to hear about your sister, this must be such a difficult time for all the family.

Unfortunately without being involved in your sister's care we cannot say how long she may have left. It does however sound like she is very poorly and becoming less well everyday.

I don't know what support your sister has at home and whether she has been referred to the palliative care team/local hospice or is she is regular contact with a community nurse. If not please do contact the GP and ask for this for her. The nurses and doctors can assess your sister and will be in a better position to give their opinion about how she is and what time frame you could be looking at.

It is important your sister is kept as comfortable as possible and this can be managed with medications as patches, dissolvable in the upper gums  or through a syringe driver if and when needed. If needed equipment  ( such as commode or hospital bed) can be brought into the home if this is where she would like to be at the very end.

We have a section on our website called the last few weeks and days that you may find useful to read. It outlines some of the signs to look out for that people are getting closer to the end.

I hope this is helpful but please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care

    Naomi
