Positive covid test, low white blood cell count and surgery supposed to be next week

What a rollercoaster this is turning out to be. My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer last month. Her surgery was meant to be 03.05.24 for a lumpectomy. She went on Friday for a pre op. Over the weekend she started to feel unwell and yesterday she tested positive for covid. She called up the hospital this morning and they said that they would have been in touch in any case as her white blood cell count was very low. She has a history of a low white blood cell count but we are guessing that covid has lowered this further. Surgery has now been postponed. Does anyone have an idea where things go now? I've read that in some instances medical professionals like to wait two months after covid. This would be awful, as my mum desperately wants to get surgery done so she can try and move forward. In saying that, I understand that the risks re anaesthetic increase after covid, so I understand that this needs to be taken into account.

Any advice would be gratefully received as I really don't know where we go from here.

  • Hello there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your mum's situation and appreciate how her now having covid has thrown a spanner in the works.

Try not to worry too much if you can for now. Firstly of course it is important to wait until your mum feels better, and hopefully this will be soon. Your mum can then contact the hospital to let them know so they can reassess her level of fitness for surgery.

As her blood counts were low they are likely to want to repeat these and decide from there the next steps forward.

Guidance around surgery after a covid infection is changing and I think it does depend on the individuals situation and risk versus benefit of delaying surgery. There has been some research to suggest that most patients who have recovered from covid may be okay to have surgery after a couple of weeks, rather than the previous 7 weeks. However it will only be your mum's hospital team who will be able to say what needs to happen in her case.

I hope this helps a little and that your mum has a clear plan very soon.
