PSA 200 need help understanding please

Hello my dads PSA was 70 a year ago he was ment to go back for more tests as his prostate was slightly enlarged he didn’t go back for a whole year now it is 200 he is 80 years old and when my mother was asking him what that ment he shut the conversation down and refused to talk about it this is very out of character for him and he walked out . The nurse has done more blood tests again today and said testing for prostate cancer . He has problems weeing stops and starts . He had a heart attack many years ago and diabetes no other problems. Can the 200 mean other things other than prostate cancer

  • Hello Shevon and welcome, I am not a nurse, though i have prostate cancer, there is always a chance it may be an enlarged prostate or prostatitis. take care.

  • Hello Shevon and thanks for the post

This must be a worrying time for the family but as others have said there could be a couple of reasons for the high psa result. It will only be further tests that can confirm for sure whether if this is prostate cancer or something else like an enlarged prostate or infection (prostatitis).

Try and encourage your dad to talk once you all know more and the more recently taken blood tests are back to find out more.

I hope everything is okay for you dad.

Do get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes
