What to do after I stop taking Letrozole?

Hi

I had breast cancer (receptor positive) in 2015 and had 3 weeks of radiotherapy. I then started 5 years of Tamoxifen and then 5 years of Letrozole which ends in Feb 2025.

I want to know which foods herbs etc I need to avoid eating/drinking. I’m have read that some things can mimic oestrogen in the body and that I should avoid them. For instance thyme. I also heard to avoid Evening Primrose oil.

It would be very helpful to know what I should avoid. Is there a book I can buy to help me?

I am concerned and anxious that once I stop the medication next year my cancer might come back.

Many thanks

Cheryl

  • Hi Cheryl

    Thank you for your email.

I can appreciate you are wanting to support your health.

We would suggest you speak with either your consultant, breast specialist nurse (CNS) or GP. We always advise patients to be very cautious when it comes to supplements as these can cause more harm than good and possibly interact with treatments. Pharmacists are usually the best people to advise about what is safe to take in terms of supplements alongside any cancer treatment drugs or other medication.

Most daily multivitamin supplements are ok, rather than single vitamins that are then taken in higher than the recommended RDA doses.

We have some general information about vitamins, and diet supplements which you may find helpful.  Also, the NHS website has information on individual vitamins and minerals.

After cancer treatment, it's normal to worry about the possibility of it returning (known as recurrence). It's important to share your concerns with your breast care nurse (BCN) and hospital specialist.

Breast Care Now has useful information on life after treatment on their website, and you may find useful tips and advice from those in a similar situation on their forum.

I hope you find this information helpful. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Tina
