Pea size lump

Hello,

I am just looking for a bit of reassurance really as my head is all over the place.

I have a 14 week old son, and in the last 10-14 days roughly he has had a pea size lump appear near the crown of his head of unknown causes. I know that it is extremely rare for it to be a sign of cancer but I can’t help the nagging feeling I have and after going to the GP I am not feeling reassured.

The GP has described the lump as fairly soft, round but it seems to remain in one spot. She believes it could be a reactive lymph node, possibly to my son’s cradle cap. She also said lymph nodes are typically found at the back of the head near the neck so she kind of contradicted her diagnosis as my son’s lump is near the top of the head. I left feeling confused and anxious, she has referred us for an ultrasound but the wait time is weeks and I just don’t know what to do with myself until then.

  • Hello and thank you for posting. Congratulations on your baby, but I am so sorry that you now have these worries.

Unfortunately, we cannot give a medical opinion on what the lump may be on your baby's head. It is not unusual for babies to have swollen nodes or cysts, but I appreciate you need a clearer answer about what is happening to your little one. If you can, do try to remember that it would be rare for this to be anything sinister.

I would suggest contacting the radiology department and saying it is for your baby and that you are happy to take any last-minute cancellations as you are worried.

Take care and I hope you have support whilst you wait for this ultrasound. Having worries about your children can be incredibly stressful for parents and it can be all you can think about until you have answers.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
