Breast Clinic Visit

I’m just back from the breast clinic and was told by the consultant that the bump I’ve been feeling under my arm is my muscle. It has gone down significantly to be fair and he said the redness was caused by me constantly touching it which has caused it to be inflamed.

I was told by my GP she was sure if it was my lymph nodes or ribbed muscle so was referred for an ultrasound.

I just wanted to put my mind at ease as I didn’t get the ultrasound. It was very quick, I was in the room for 5 minutes and he was certain it was muscle. I’m relieved but my sister after talking with her keeps asking me why I wasn’t given the ultrasound.

Thank you.

  • When the consultant examined me and felt a lump at the bottom of my armpit he related it to what he felt in the left breast.  He was convinced that the two were the result of cancer and ordered a mammogram followed by ultrasound and biopsies.  I presume that if there was no breast problem an ultrasound would not be needed. Do not listen to your sister!  I hope you will trust the consultant's verdict.and feel happy that you will not need treatment.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I do think as you were seen by the breast specialist team at the breast clinic and had your breast assessed you should be reassured. I say this because they are experts in all breast conditions. Not everyone needs to have an ultrasound scan. If the doctor that examined you had any concerns they would have discussed this with you and they would have suggested further tests.

If you are still worried and do not feel reassured by the breast specialist team perhaps you should go back to the GP who referred you to talk about your concerns. Usually they would get a summary letter from the breast specialist at the hospital.

I hope this helps. Give us a ring if you would like to talk things over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,
