Bleeding during sex

I'm 41 and have been bleeding continously for 5 weeks. I'm currently on the pill. I have had a smear 6 months ago and they thought they had seen something abnormal maybe polyps or something so was referred to gynecologist.

I had my app at gynecologist and they said eveything was good and it's old scar tissue.

So when I went again to doctors recently cause I have been bleeding they did an examination and when i asked they said it looked abnormal and if they didn't have notes for gynecologist they would refer me.

Advice is to leave it and continue on pill. During sex yesterday I bleed quite alot....what should.i do?

  • Go back and ask for further test such as a transvaginal scan where they can look at your uterus etc. This type of bleeding is not normal. But could be caused by a number of things. Polyps, fibroids etc. but needs investigating. Make it clear if you are worried and how it is affecting you. Wishing you all the best.

  • Thank you just feel there maybe something wrong that's been missed. Transviginal scan? Don't know if I've has this? Is this a internal scan?

  • Yes it is an internal scan where they look at your womb, I had one in the past due to heavy bleeding where they thought I had fibroids and then another a couple of years later due to further heavy bleeding and spotting to check to see if the coil I was given to manage symptoms was was in the correct place. (Following a diagnosis of adynomyosis)

You know your body and when something is wrong - as I have learnt more and more you have to advocate for yourself. No harm in going back and seeing another doctor, explaining your additional symptoms and asking to be referred.

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear about the bleeding that is affecting you and I can appreciate your worry.

Going back to your GP to ask again if the bleeding continues would be the best thing to do. If you do need to go back to your GP, you may want to ask if you need to be referred back to gynaecology.

I realise that you may be worried that you have cancer so please remember that for most women bleeding between periods is caused by other less serious conditions. The NHS has information about bleeding between periods on its website.

You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
