Brain tumour

My close relative has a tumour but the biopsy was inconclusive as it was too difficult to access. Cells were taken from around the area and cancer has been confirmed. As it looks as though surgery will not be an option what sort of treatment is likely to be offered please? Thank you.

  • Hello, and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your close relative. This must be a difficult time for you all.

The treatment decisions about your relative will be made at a formal meeting called an MDT (Multi Disciplinary Team) meeting where all the doctors involved in their care meet to discuss a patient's next steps. This will include looking at where the cancer is, how aggressive the cancer looks and a patients general fitness. You can look at this on our website on treatment decisions.

There are other treatments that the doctors may consider such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Have a look at the main treatments here.

Everyone's situation is very different and each case is considered very individually. The doctors will also take in to account what your relative wants.

I do hope that you are all getting plenty of support during this unsettling time.

You and your relative may find it helpful to also contact The Brain Tumour Charity. this offers relatives and patients support and more information about this condition.

You are very welcome to ring the nurses on our helpline if you would like to go through any of this with us.

Our helpline number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and our lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
