Colonoscopy

I was put on iron tablets as my iron storage was low. Gp said it was low but I wasn't anaemic.  She asked if I was losing blood. I told her not that I knew of. She asked me to hand in a stool sample. It came back positive and she is referring me for a colonoscopy.  I haven't slept As I'm worried sick incase it's cancer. I have no other symptoms. What is the chances it is. I am 67 years old

  • Hello Isobel29 and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you are undergoing some tests and appreciate what a worrying time this must be for you.

A positive FIT test means that some microscopic ( that cannot be seen) blood has been found in the stools that needs looking into. There can be many reasons for this other than cancer but only further tests such as a colonoscopy that passes a camera up the back passage to take a look can give more information about this.

I'm afraid we cannot say what the risk of you having cancer is, and unfortunately it is a matter of a waiting game in finding out more.

People say keeping busy and your mind on other things can help so try and do this if you can.

I hope you get on okay and everything works out okay for you. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi
