Concerned about skin cancer

Can you help me? Over a year ago I contacted my GP regarding a build up of patch skin on my face and small itchy bumps on my chest.  I’d previously taken my son to the psychiatrist (he has autism).  The psychiatrist told me to see my gp as it looked like I had something called Addisons disease.  My late mum had skin cancer small bumps on her chest which were itchy and also the same discolouration on her forehead.  Her go referred her to dermatologist who did a biopsy diagnosing her with first stages of skin cancer.  This is similar symptoms to what I have but couldn’t get a face to face meeting with my GP had to send him photos.  To be honest he called me up and said it was prob just sun damage. I tried to explain about my mum and same symptoms but he brushed me off.  The bumps on my chest are extremely itchy and no amount of antihistamine will ease it.  I’m using the same products I always have my skin on face is getting more patchy.  But I feeel I can’t contact the gp as I feel he thinks m wasting his time.  I’ve never ever met him it’s all phone calls.  This is increasing my anxiety disorder tenfold. I’m in early 50’s and feel scared to call him.  Please help????? Advice would be appreciated l. I dj t want to go to a&e as I’m disabled with hip dysplasia and significant arthritis again genetic on my mums side.  I’m at a loss.

thanks

  • Can you see a different GP at your surgery? You should definitely ask for a face to face appointment even if it's with the same dr. Your health has priority over any concerns you may feel that you're "wasting " someone's time.

  • Hello Jen_fowler and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about the symptoms you have and appreciate after your Mum's diagnosis you are concerned about this.

Unfortunately no one here can say for sure what this might be caused by and it is important to try and get a different doctor to assess you.You won't be wasting their time and it is important that you get the chance to be listened to share your concerns with them.

It can be frustrating to not feel taken seriously by a health professional so I am wondering if there is a different GP at the surgery who you can ask to have an appointment with. Failing that you may wish to call NHS 111 out of hours to see if they can get a doctor to take a look at this for you. The only thing I will say is if you need an assessment by a skin specialist ( dermatologist) this referral will need to be made by your own GP practice.

I hope you can get this looked at soon. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Naomi
