Safe sex on cancer treatments

Hi. My husband takes Axitinib for kidney cancer. We have an active sex life,  but no can say whether we should use condoms or not? The consultant said he'd find out but didn't come back with an answer. We are using them mostly but I need to know if it's safe for me if we don't? Thank you

I am sorry to hear your husband is currently receiving treatment

It is my understanding as like with most other cancer drugs it is best to use a condom whilst a patient is taking axitinib. This is both to protect against pregnancy and to protect you from any of the drug that may be present in the semen.

I hope this helps. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes
