Third time round

Hi I am new to this but my background is I was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2015 , had kidney and tumour within kidney removed by keyhole surgery, all went well until December 2022 and ct reveale a new tumor in left kidney so.after 7 years the medical team decided I should have open surgery to remove the 2.5cm tumor,  this happened in Feb 2023, tough after surgery but got there. Histology revealed it was an aggressive tumor with some rhaboid features,  so it was decided ct in3 months and then another in 6 months. 3mt ct was clear but my 6mt ct which I had last week showed a.1cm tumor in the fat surrounding the kidney, so I am so so worried  I am.told another MDT meeting , to have surgery or chemotherapy,  this is my third time and I'm so worried is this the end. I never had chemotherapy.  Just wondering if anyone else has had recurrence and how they coped. Thanking you

  • Hello Tippfm and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your kidney cancer coming back and appreciate what a worrying time this must be for you, alongside having many questions.

You have posted on the 'ask the nurses' section of the forum which is fine but as you are asking for other patients who have been through similar stories you may wish to post on a different thread as well as here.

Unfortunately as you will know too well there is a risk of kidney cancer coming back after surgery and it is now a matter of waiting to see what the MDT decide in terms of the best treatment for you moving forward.

As you say further surgery is often an option especially if it is localised to the area near where the kidney was. Chemotherapy isn't common in kidney cancer but may be used in some situations as you can read about here. You can read about other treatments including targeted and immunotherapy drugs here.

I understand periods of time waiting for more information can be unsettling for people. Try and sit tight for now and wait and see what the MDT decides and then discuss this and any other questions you have with your team involved in your care. Keeping yourself busy and your mind on other things can be helpful at times like this.

Please do get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

Wishing you all the very best,

    Naomi

  • Hi Naomi

thank you for your supportive reply, much appreiciated. I had a feeling after I submitted it that I went onto the incorrect forum and I will of course post on a different  thread also so I can also get other patients opinion. but you are correct , I have been here twice before and thank god able to tell the story so I will keep busy until I hear more from the team. Once again thank you.

  • Hi I saw your post is a few months old but wondered if you had any treatment or are still on anything now? I had my right kidney removed almost a year ago and I have been on pembrolizumab immunothery treatments to help prevent recurrence, as it was aggressive tho not that big. I've had 7 out of 9 so nearly there. Side effects have been manageable but I get v tired. Do you live in Tipperary? I wondered because of your user name. My husband has family there, tho we live near London.
