I'm Nicky, 60 years old, living in Bromley, near London. I was diagnosed late last year (2023) with kidney cancer, which was found incidentally when I was having an ultrasound of the upper abdomen for something else. It was a horrible shock. I had my right kidney removed at the end of November. The op went well and I recovered well which was good. The tumour was roughly 5cm x 6cm so not that large but when we went back in January I was told it was an aggressive grade and quite high risk of recurring so I opted to have adjuvant treatment - pembrolizumab. It's now nearly a year since the op and I've had 7 out of the 9 treatments, so will finish in Jan. I have a lovely supportive husband which helps but I miss working - even though I'd be too tired! I feel a bit lost at times though I see my mum a lot and help her out as she's not that mobile. I have a few other things to occupy me. I have had 3 monthly scans and waiting to hear the results of the last one which was only this week. I am scared it will come back - maybe not soon but later. Try not to dwell on it but it's hard sometimes. And it has been life-changing. It would be great to share stories with people who understand.
