Colonoscopy question

I had some rectal bleeding and a lot of small piles/polyps along the lining of the inner entrance to my rectum. I have had two positive fit tests with a result of 187.2 ug/g and 23.6 ug/g. consequently, I have been referred for an urgent colonoscopy. I also have very low iron and am anaemic – the doctor has put me on a course of Ferrous Fumerate for this. I have also been absolutely exhausted for several years, more so in the last 12 months and could literally sleep for 24 hours a day and still feel tired. I am trying to take it all in my stride and not be too worried. However, I do have a question; for approximately three months, I have been experiencing chest pain (Doc has prescribed medication for anxiety) and when I go from sitting position to lying down in bed, and sometimes, turning over, I experience a huge pain which makes me physically cry out loud. It feels like it is the middle of my chest/rib cage and causes a shocking moment of severe pain. Could this potentially be connected to something to do with the intestines/ Something the colonoscopy might detect, rather than anxiety? I only wonder because I read another post which mentioned the rib cage in conjunction with a colonoscopy.

  • Hello Rainbowroo and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about the symptoms you have and appreciate what a anxious time this must be for you.

Unfortunately no one here can say what the chest/rib pain may be caused by and whether it is linked to the other symptoms. It is however important to let your doctor know that this is ongoing so they can reassess you and arrange more tests if they feel necessary.

A colonoscopy is able to investigate anything going on in the large intestines and rectum so is unlikely to pick up anything higher up.

Many people suffer with anxiety and this can be heighten when undergoing investigations. As I say I can't say if the chest pain you are experiencing is linked to the anxiety or something else but if you remain concerned do talk it through with your doctor.

I hope your colonoscopy goes well and you know more about your situation very soon.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

  • Thanks Naomi. The hospital phoned and I’m in for the colonoscopy on Monday at 10am. They’ve been very speedy with it all so that is good. Do you know anything about the levels of my fit tests? Are they high? Average? Low??
    Thank you,

    xx

  • Hello Rainbowroo and thanks for the update

Glad you have a date for your colonoscopy, in the meantime try and keep your mind on other things.

You really can't read too much into the FIT test results as it really is more about it being positive and needing further tests to find out more. Remember a FIT test is there to detect the presence of invisible blood and that can be caused by so many different things and not just cancer.

I hope everything goes well for you

    Take care

    Naomi
