Efudex cream side effects

New to the forum with a question that may seem silly but…

I have a chronic condition with functional neurological symptoms that gift to me headaches, vision problems and poor balance.

I was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in 2017 and was treated by surgical removal. The cancer returned last year and was treated with Efudex cream. Whilst using the cream my neurological symptoms got worse during the period of application but started to  improved approximately 5-6 weeks later. Advice from my GP and hospital doctor was that the strength of the cream and topical application would not be the cause of the deterioration of the neurological symptoms which seemed correct to me.

In the last week I have been asked to apply Efudex again (4 months after the last application ) and once more the neurological symptoms are deteriorating.

Is it possible that Efudex is causing the deterioration? Has anyone had similar experience with the medication.

Thank you for any help.

  • Hallo I have used Eufidix several times for Actinic Keratosis  my dermatologist says it works excellently and although I find some of the areas I have treated especially my chest have been exceedingly painful I have never had any other reactions to the cream

I known reading the accompanying leaflet that using on too many areas at once can lead it to getting in to the blood stream but honestly can’t remember if it mentioned headaches and dizziness being a problem hopefully another  member might be able to offer some insight for you

  • Thank you for taking the time to reply to my message.. The Efudex is only being applied to a small area and don’t particularly believe that it is causing my neurological symptoms to be worse. The reason for posting is because my knowledge is low and would just  like to know one way or the other so I can continue or stop the treatment.

    Thanks

  • Hi, I have been using Eufidix of and on for the last 7 years for recurring Actinic Keratosis . Apart from the red soreness the only side effects I have thought might be connected to it was a strange off metallic taste I had when treating near my nose recently.  I am going to start treatment on my upper lip shortly so it may come back. Will have to see. Wishing you all the best. Xx

  • Thank you for your response and wish you all the best with your treatment.

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

Unfortunately, we cannot say whether the symptoms you are experiencing are being caused by the efudix. Your doctor at the hospital/ GP is best placed to advise you as they know your situation. It might be worth having another chat with them especially if your symptoms are worsening as it may be possible they could prescribe a different cream if necessary.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care, all the best.

  • I had to treat both upper and lower lips too Be prepared to look a tad scary I was lucky as treated mine during Covid so had a mask on when I went out

  • Yes, a week in and I have a very interesting looking red patch on my upper lip just under my nose. It's rather sore already but only another 2 weeks of treatment and 3 weeks of recovery and I will be back to normal!!! So  far not had any taste disturbances.  After 7 years of using Efudix I am well used to people aking what have you done to your face!  I now have a BCC on my nose which will require surgery with a graft so that should be fun! Take care, keep well. Xx

  • Sorry to hear you will need surgery My lips looked awful and must admit uncomfortable but TBH I know the cream is doing its job and it won’t go on forever so  was just a waiting game as ever with Eufidex The worst area I treated was my chest that really was painful

  • Nothing lasts forever,  we must just keep a smile on our face and plod on. Xx
