Mastectomy

I am one week post mastectomy. What can I do to relieve nerve pain across my back and down my arm? Does hot/cold or massage help and is this advisable? Any advice appreciated. Thank you.

  • Hello Pomme ,did you have lymph removed as well ? I would have a chat with the Breast Nurses , I think nerve pain is quite difficult to control , I had bilateral mastectomies and was advised to do certain exercises and after lymphclearance ,gentle massage up that arm . Also to take Paracetamol if needed . Luckily enough I didn’t really have much discomfort . Don’t really know about hot or cold packs . Best give Breast care a ring ,to be on safe side . All the best xxx

  • Thanks for the reply. Yes the pain is from lymph node removal.

  • Hello Pomme, and thank you for posting.

I'm sorry you are experiencing pain post-mastectomy, but be reassured this is normal.

It looks like you have had some good advice from another forum user who has been through similar.

As well as using over-the-counter painkillers, using heat or cold may help (everyone is different with what works for them). Here is some information on pain after surgery from the UK breast charity, Breast Cancer Now.

Do get in touch with your breast care nurse (CNS) and let them know how you are doing.

Take care and you may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
