To have surgery for throat cancer or not?

Hello everyone

im recently diagnosed with cancer on the left tonsil and also in two lymph nodes. I’ve been offered:

a) a choice of surgery to remove the cancer followed 6 weeks later by 6 weeks of chemo radiation or

b) no surgery but just 6 weeks chemo radiation

I really don’t know which to choose. I had rather liked the idea of cutting the cancer out first and knowing was gone with chemo radiation then used to ‘mop up’. However it seems that the outcomes are likely to be the same (hopefully a cure), but the surgery route takes 6 weeks longer because of the recovery period. I’m also worried about any physical changes surgery might bring.
Has anyone been in a similar situation - if so could you tell me what you chose and why? With hindsight would you have gone the other route?
many thanks in advance for any advice of support. I just don’t know what to do.
thank you xxx

  • Hello and thanks for your post

Treatment decisions are often challenging and many people struggle with them, but I'm sure you know, only you can decide what to do.

I think it is important that you understand all the information you have been given by your specialist team to help reach a decision. They should explain the pros and cons of both treatments .There is often quite a lot to take in and it can be overwhelming,  so do get back in touch with your team if there is anything you aren't sure about.

There are some risks involved in having any cancer treatment because of the possible side effects. But in general these are outweighed by the potential for benefit, for example by preventing the cancer from coming back.

We have information on tonsil cancer on our website here

Whatever treatment option you decide, I think it's  important that you feel comfortable about going forward. If you have a specialist nurse involved in your care then do talk this through with them.

Hopefully people will come along and post their experiences here as this is the ‘ask the nurse ‘section. If not, you could try posting on other threads to see if you get more responses.

Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
