Cancer

I’m only a 14 year old boy but am worried about the chances of loosing my parents to cancer how high are the chances that they will get cancer throughout their lives and the likelihood of it being operable

  • Hello Ginger.riley, and welcome, that's a question i think we would all like answering, but is also one that is impossible to answer, as we would only be guessing. I know the thought of cancer is worrying, but modern screening and testing are catching more cancers earlier and earlier, making it much easier to treat and todays anti-cancer drugs and treatments are amazing compared to 5 years ago and they are only going to get better and better and with lots of new ways of treating cancer being developed all the time everyone is going to benefit. Riley i have prostate cancer, the average age men get prostate cancer is 66, and for every 100 men who get prostate cancer only 2 will die of it, and things are only going to improve, I know you love your parents and don't want to lose them, but please don't worry about something that may never happen. take care.

  • Hi Ginger. Riley and thanks for your post

Most of the time, we do not know why one person gets cancer while someone else does not. But the majority of people who do develop it are over the age of 60

There are many factors involved in developing cancer. Having a healthy lifestyle does not guarantee that our family will not get cancer. But it reduces the risk and improves general health. You can read more about this on our website here.

The best thing for us all is to be aware of our bodies and if we notice any unusual signs or symptoms that persist to get checked out by the GP. This doesn’t mean that something is wrong but it should be checked out just to be on the safe.

I'm not sure if you've told your parents that you are worried about them developing cancer. If not, it would be a good idea to tell them as I'm sure they would want to know this is on your mind. Talking about these worries can often help to ease them.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,

    Celene
