MRI waiting times

Hi,

I had an MRI of my liver and MRCP Last Tuesday (16th January 2024) and I’m still waiting on results / a follow up appointment with my consultant.
each day that passes is causing my anxiety to get worse as I’ve been very ill since September and gradually getting worse, my liver functions are ‘deranged’ and I’m sick of taking morphine as it isn’t taking my pain away.

i was just wondering as to how long is normal to wait?

my consultant gastroenterologist is NHS but I was referred privately through NHS - I thought it would be quicker to receive results as my scan appointments thankfully came in quick.

everyone says no news is good news but I now don’t know what to think.

does anyone have any similar experiences and or general experience with waiting for MRI results? Thanks

  • Hi Hope4132 and welcome, as someone who has had many MRI scans i usually get my results in 14 days, though i have never gone private. Not sure about no news is good news, though if it is obviously serious results can be had quicker. take care.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

Waiting for scan results is very stressful and it’s not unusual to wait 2 to 4 weeks. There is no easy way to get through this waiting time, but many people tell us that keeping busy and sticking to a routine can help a little.

If you don’t hear anything by the end of the week you can contact the consultant’s secretary to ask about your results. If you have any difficulty with this, or your GP should be able to help.

Also, do let your GP know that you are still in pain. They can assess you and increase your pain medication.

I hope you know more about your situation soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
